Cabrera Outlasts Mariners

The Orioles, behind one of the most solid outings of Daniel Cabrera’s career, pulled out a tense win over the Mariners, 3-2. The Nuke Laloosh-type O’s right-hander unfurled an eight-inning, zero-walk gem, displaying great stuff, precise command, and excellent poise to overcome sloppy O’s fielding and baserunning. Nick Markakis made sure the stellar pitching performance wasn’t for naught with a homerun to improve the Orioles to 6-1 in one-run games this season. Markakis’ home run was a solo shot, but it came in the eighth inning and broke a 2-2 tie. He also had an RBI ground-out and is hitting .310 with four home runs and 10 RBI on the season. Melvin Mora drove in the other Baltimore run with an RBI triple.

Cabrera’s now had quality starts in three straight appearances, but this is still Daniel Cabrera (photo) we’re talking about. There’s no question he has enormous potential, but there’s still not much reason to think he’s turned a corner.

George Sherrill, acquired from Seattle in February with four others in the trade that brought Erik Bedard to Seattle, made it interesting as he allowed a leadoff single in the ninth to Raul Ibanez. But then Adrian Beltre flied out, Jose Vidro struck out and Richie Sexson fouled out for Sherrill’s seventh save in seven chances.
