Strategy on Cabrera: Take
Despite five walks, Daniel Cabrera held the Cardinals to one run in three-plus innings on Tuesday in a 2-2 tie. He allowed just one hit, but the walk total was unacceptable. He has issued seven free passes in 4 2/3 innings this spring since a strong first outing against the Nationals on March 1. A fielder’s choice as Nick Markakis grounded into a double play and Brandon Fahey’s score on a wild pitch accounted for both Baltimore runs.
The key to Cabrera’s outing was striking out Chris Duncan with the bases loaded to end the first inning without damage. Cabrera needed 31 pitches to get the first three outs, walking two. Seven Orioles pitchers, the last six working an inning apiece, combined for 11 strikeouts.
Brian Roberts finished 1-for-3 with a run scored in front of two Cubs scouts on Tuesday. The long-rumored trade that would send Roberts to Chicago continues to seem like it’s just a matter of time.
